Welcome to FAQ Friday! We post a call for questions every Thursday on our Facebook wall and select the 2 most popular questions on Friday to answer for you here! Let’s get started!

Here are our top two questions this week:

“Where do you get and which wide white wood drop do I see in a lot of your images?” ~Joy

Mariah’s Answer: Hi, Joy! Those are actually painted barnwood planks Heidi picked up at a farm in upstate New York. The other side of them is a dark brown natural wood that you’d see in a lot of our photos from last year. They are separate, so we can turn them all around if we want to use the darker brown.  🙂

“How do you get that warm/soft look in some of your outdoor photos?” ~Amy

Mariah’s Answer: Hi, Amy! I think the ‘softness’ comes from a combination of blur, highlight/shadow balancing, and processing. For maximum depth of field and bokeh, we use prime lenses at low apertures to blur the foreground and background. We also shoot in RAW so that we’re able to balance highlights and shadows in ACR. In Photoshop, we use “haze” actions to even out the contrast, warming filters to add warmth, and the channel mixer to increase reds for a ‘pink, glowy’ look.
